“Obama has just nationalized …. GM. Comrade Obama! Fidel, careful or we are going to end up to his right” Hugo Chavez.

Nice quote, and considering the source, a worrisome one at that. You know, I remember just 6 months ago I voiced my concern over some of Barack Obama’s views saying they sounded socialist, and that I was afraid of the direction he would take the country should he wind up being president. Once elected though I figure I’d just back off and watch. He was after all our new president and the man definitely deserved an opportunity to do what he needed to to bring our country out of the difficult situation we were in. But after his first 100+ days little has happened to quelch my suspicions about the guy. In fact, there seems to be every indication that I was right.
Now when I let my thoughts be known, I remember getting some responses from people I knew with differing views stating that I was paranoid, and that I was just upset that my man wasn’t winning and that it was just sour grapes. I was grabbing onto anything to justify why Obama shouldn’t get elected because of my bias. My question now is this. Why would Hugo Chavez be so giddy about this guy if what I had stated weren’t true? Obama’s ideas about a national health care system were very socialist, but his decision to take over GM, hire someone to oversee it and let the government run a once privately owned company is a dangerous first step in a very wrong direction. Then, his idea to put in legislature that would limit the salaries of corporation owners was presented. So he’s saying that government can control what a company owner can earn? Look I am aware that corruption exists in this free market system, but stepping in would then mean that the free market system would no longer exist. Then we’d have to rely on government to decide who makes how much. And that is beyond dangerous. It is removing our right to make whatever we can and earn what is rightfully ours. I’m sure Obama’s thought process is that he could remove the corruption in the corporate world by presenting this legislature, but the truth is that the greedy will be greedy, and will look to steal and cheat in other ways, while those who make an honest living will be penalized. Oh yeah, right! These are rich people we’re talking about here. It shouldn’t matter because they probably already have enough. That is a flawed way of thinking because what will invariably happen is that this will trickle down to the masses, then we will all be “controlled” by what the government determines we should be worth.
I’m still being paranoid, right? Then why is it that we get articles like this one coming out of Russia?

We have to remember something. We haven’t lived under a socialist type of society, so it would be difficult for us to distinguish what it really is until we are actually living in it. But the Russians definitely recognize it, and they are laughing at us because we are beginning to follow the same footsteps that led them on the destructive path to a socialist government, one that wound up falling apart at the seems and left millions struggling for years as the nation(s) it affected fought to recover from the misery brought about by socialism.
But, we’re smarter than that! We’ll never let that happen. You mean, the ignorant majority that wouldn’t recognize socialism if it spit them in the face. You mean like those Hollywood stars who for years have hailed people like Castro and Guevara as heroes, without ever living under the atrocities they created, or the oppressive society they founded? We live in a society oblivious to what is happening outside our own country. Most of this country can’t find Cuba or name its leader, (it’s that island where that poor father was trying to retrieve that poor child from… the one being held hostage by those dastardly people in Miami!) and they’re supposed to recognize the (lack of) values in his that oppressive government. They don’t know who Hugo Chavez is, and the majority never knew the difference between Russia and the USSR (Aren’t they the same thing?). How do we expect the vast majority of this nation to recognize socialism then? They can’t.
Yes, our capitalist society is flawed. And there are idealists out there trying to fix it anyway possible. But the way to fix it is not to abandon the system, by letting the government take over it. GM went bankrupt? Let them die a slow death. That will teach everyone else that they need to be careful and not make the same mistakes that this corporate behemoth made. By government taking over, other companies figure they’ll have a safety net to fall on should they mess up. Then little by little we as Americans will give away our power to an ideal that doesn’t exist. We will just be passing over our power to those who are IN power. That will leave us powerless. Much like those in Cuba are powerless. I’m being extreme again, am I? It may not happen overnight, like it did in our neighbor to the south (and that little island that my parents were hoping to have raised my family in if it wasn’t for the government taking everything that was theirs). But if this country keeps believing that we are immune to this happening, we will find ourselves on the wrong side. In other words, to the left of Chavez and Castro. Hey, that wasn’t my observation remember. It was that of somebody who has been there. Chavez himself. And he is sooooooo happy about that. Scary!!
Three and a half years left. Is there no hope for us? No, there’s still hope. Obama could wake up and realize we’re going in the wrong direction. The pope may also follow Father Albert into the Episcopal Church. Both are possible, yet both are HIGHLY unlikely. Still, we can pray that he open his eyes (Obama, not the pope). We also could make a difference by voting in 18 months to shift the power in the senate, not because we necessarily need a republican House or Senate, but so that we can have balance. Balance will stop us from leaning one way or the other, and keep us from falling dangerously into patterns of government we don’t want to follow. If you haven’t noticed I am conservative overall, but I do recognize the dangers of leaning too far to one direction or the other. Extremism is dangerous. That’s why I have trouble listening to Rush Limbaugh. The guy’s head is not always screwed on correctly. But then, the opposite of Rush, is Barack Obama. Both hold some truths in what they say, but let their ideologies stand in the way of really knowing what’s best for the WHOLE COUNTRY. Let’s stand up before it’s too late and we find ourselves powerless to a government we gave our power away to. We still have the power. Let’s use it. Let’s give that guy in Venezuela (yes, that’s where Hugo Chavez resides) something to complain about again. If he is upset at us, we must be doing something right. For right now though, he seems to be smiling a bit too much. He sees too much he likes in us, and that is not good. Not at all.
BTW, I want to thank my buddies Wil and Alex for posting these links where I can find them.
It’s all scary. But, still not as scary as Bush and the ill-tempered McCain and rifle-wielding Palin. Yes, Obama should open his eyes about how dangerous it is to try to communicate with these dictators so openly and put his hand in business issues.
BTW, since you brought up the pope… Why is a former Nazi the pope? Maybe he should open his eyes to a lot of things, which I’m sure you and I would disagree about.
Don’t worry, the pope is not going to follow Father Albert anywhere. Nobody is going to. Faithful Catholics aren’t going to take any initiative to question anything. They’re happy with the rules. I’m sure there is recruiting going on for the next celebrity priest to replace Albertico
Keep up the controversy! As you can see… I love it
Adeli, I’m sorry but I’m going to have to disagree with your “not as scary as Bush or McCain” comment. The reason is this. With both Bush and McCain, their policies come and go with their presidencies. The worst that can happen is that you disagree with their political views, and that after 4 years you just do away with them. Socialism is an ideology and if it is introduced and not recognized it can take over a government much like cancer can completely overtake a body. With the trillion dollar bailout, Obama has already separated more money to be spent than ALL previous presidents put together (feel free to look this up). That includes ALL the money spent in Iraq that everybody was crying about. He spends our money like it’s his, and we will probably not see it again. And as we come out of recession and into inflation, we will be looking MORE towards the government than before, and that will leave us, as I said, powerless.
And as far as the pope is concerned let’s backtrack a little. Our former pope was Polish, and was persecuted by the Nazis. Read his book for the accounts of what he and his family had to go through. Yet as pope, he chose as his confessor the very man who is now pope. Why would someone once persecuted by Nazis choose a former Nazi as his confessor?
I will say this, few people can say anything bad about Pope JPII. Even his enemies had trouble bad-mouthing the guy. His choice of confessor, confidant, and closest friend says ALOT about forgiveness, and also told the world that this man could be trusted, because he himself entrusted him to so much. I still know little of Pope G, but I knew a lot about Pope JPII, and I can’t help but trust HIS judgement. I think it’s time that we like him learn to forgive our “enemies”. Remember JP also PERSONALLY forgave the guy who attempted to kill him. If GXVII is OK with him, then I’ll trust him too and forgive anything he may have done in the past (of which I honestly know little). BTW, remember that Jesus chose Paul, persecutor of early Christians to be THE APOSTLE, as he is referred to. He was in many ways like the Nazis looking to condemn to death anyone following this “Christ”. And yet Christ chose him. Something to think about….
I have nothing bad to say about Pope John either. He is the most forgiving person that’s existed. I liked him very much, and he was very Jesus-like, hands down. The current pope, no way José.
I’m just thinking (while also hoping to be visitor 1000) that while the country seems to be tilting more towards the socialistic spectrum, where is our 8 weeks government mandated of paid vacation . . . I could sure about use it right now;-)
Seriously though, we are not even 6 months into the Obama presidency, and I am shocked by how quickly (some might say recklessly) we are making wholesale changes to many of the underpinnings of the America of our forefathers, and that these changes are ones that will be long lasting, and difficult to undo even if the majority of American’s decide this isnt the kind of change they voted for.
Pope G? We have a new pope?
By the way, I just realized that I referrred to our most holy Pope Benedict as Pope Gregory (what the G stood for)… my mistake. I told you I didn’t know much about the guy!!!
