This is NOT a Book Report

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Some poems are long
And others are short
I guess they’re like hair
Or an assigned book report
This one’s like the latter
(In length’s what I mean;
I’ve not written a book report
Since I was nineteen)

SOME PICS FROM IMPROV NIGHT FROM MY BIRTHDAY

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Here are a few pics from my birthday bash “Who’s Line” style…

Here is a recap of some of the events… pics are worth 1000 words after all
This is me making my grand entrance (to thunderous applause I might add)
img_3615.jpg

Here, Nestor and I are playing “Emotions”. I was interviewing him for a job at a diaper factory.
img_3630.jpg

Achi and Rene are color commentator and play by play guy for a “SportsCenter” feature of Rene’s wife, Pattie, doing some house work (no pics of Pattie, sorry)
img_3631.jpg

My brother Nacho and I then played a game I called “Tupperware” quotes. We were smurfs leading a retreat at a church.
img_3642.jpg

Luis then accompanied me as I “attempted” to sing the blues. I had to try to link blue pen, having the crabs, using Natural Family Planning, going to the doctor, and getting dumped all in the same song… OUCH!
img_3643.jpg

In this next picture Alex Suarez and Robert are playing freeze tag. I will pass on explaining the theme. The next picture is of Rene popping a zit on my forehead, again while playing freeze tag.
img_3655.jpg img_3658.jpg

Then Frank and Achi had to do a recount of Star Wars in 60 seconds… and then in 30, and then in 15… finally in SEVEN!! (Help me Obi-Wan you’re my only hope!)
img_3664.jpg

Achi, Titi, and Ralph then played a round of Jeopardy… amazingly all the questions werre geared at poking fun at me. I don’t understand why?
img_3677.jpg

The next game was another game of “Emotions” called “Hitchhiker”. In this picture, Robert and I have been picked up by the driver, Nestor. He would later pick up my brother in law Jorge also. Our emotions changed from anxious to melancholy, to excited, to nostalgic, and then back again!
img_3683.jpg

Then, Pattie, Luis, and Idelio played a round of “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, where they each had to provide advice to audience members who needed consultation.
img_3689.jpg

Finally, I closed the show with a rendition of the classic hit first performed by Joe Tunon and Javier Mariscal, “The Ballad of the Fruit Salad”

This was truly a great night. I am looking forward to another night like this!

TWO POEMS (BOUND FOR HEAVEN, 30 DAYS)

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

HERE ARE TWO POEMS THAT I WROTE ABOUT 13 YEARS AGO. I JUST FOUND THESE ALONG WITH A SLEW OF OTHERS I WROTE FROM 15 TO 20 YEARS BACK. LITTLE BY LITTLE I WILL BE ADDING THEM TO MY SITE. THESE TWO POEMS WERE BOTH WRITTEN WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH THAT I WAS DATING MY WIFE, DANIA.

BOUND FOR HEAVEN

A soul bound for heaven
No longer in the grasp of sin
Conquered by the love of God
Just a moment more… I’ll be there soon

Caught by surprise
As another soul appears
The trip’s somehow delayed
As I wait for her to catch up… I stand by the moon

As we meet something happens
My destination is forgotten
We get lost in each other
A new life begins… Stronger than the two before

Happiness reaches a new level
Our union forms an awesome bond
We start to walk together
Perfection’s never been so close… But we still need more

We redirect our focus
From one another to the one above
We start walking hand in hand
Two souls now joined as one… Two souls bound for heaven

30 DAYS

30 days of happiness
30 days of no regrets
30 days of utter ecstacy
30 days I won’t forget

30 days is not too short
For me to say i love you
30 days in not toolong
For me to not think of you
30 days is not enough
For me to express what I feel inside
If I told you 30 days is all I wanted
Then I take it back - I lied

It seems like only yesterday
I first laid eyes on you
It feels like it’s been forever
That we’ve been doing the things we do
Only 30 days have passed
Since you first said yes to me
But now I can see us both together
For all of eternity

You would not beleive
How in these 30 days I’ve grown
These 30 days I’ve been with you
Have been the best 30 days I’ve known
And to God each day i pray
For just another day
It would be worth more than a lifetime
Because I’ve had a lifetime worth of happiness
In just these 30 days

It seems like only yesterday
It feels like forever
It has been 30 days
30 incredible days

Motivated to WORK OUT

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Exercise, exercise, going to work out
Going to see if I can pump myself up
Get out some light weights for these unused muscles
To lift and lift until I’ve had enough
Got some blubber to burn and burn really fast
I have a six pack I haven’t seen in forever
And even if I never ever see it again
At least I’ll be able to say that my gut looks better
I’m going to try to chisel my arms and my abs
And get the attention of GQ magazine
And after a few months of really working hard
I’ll be hot and luscious and sizzlin’ and lean
My body’ll be rock solid for all of the girls
To come and check out and thoroughly admire
Until my wife stands in their line of sight
Sending them on their way, putting out their fire
I’ll be so irresistable I won’t be able to go out
I’ll have to stay home and work out some more
And soon I’ll have gotten so gargantuanly big
That I no longer will fit through the door
My chest will have grown to be the size of a truck
My back is going to be as big as a tractor
This is to prove wrong all of my naysayers
And to shut the mouths of all of my detractors
I hope the world’s ready for what going to transpire
I’m coming out with a full head of steam
Oh wait, my wife’s thrown away my old rusted weights
So much for my ridiculously far-fetched dream

So, who wants to go to Burger King? I’m buying!
(Limit two, please)

STEP 1

Sunday, April 8th, 2007

It seems that no matter how much I write

I find that I have to put up a really big fight

It’s easier to just close the window and walk

Than to struggle to overcome this writer’s block

But if I don’t choose to write then the block will not end

And I’ll be giving in to this lazy new trend

A trend where I just watch TV and eat

A trend where I just give in to defeat

I cannot allow myself to let an empty mind win

So I figure the best way to beat it is to simply begin

AHA! I have won, because some thing’s on this page

Hopefully this will push my creativity out of its cage

The first step’s the hardest, and the first step I took

Now maybe I’ll write enough to fill up a whole book

MY LATEST WORK OF ART

HERE I AM AFTER SHAVING AND CUTTING MY OWN HAIR. I DID PRETTY GOOD RIGHT? IT’S EASY WHEN YOU’RE GOING BALD… JUST DON’T CUT THE TOP!!

AFTER photo-64.jpg

BEFORE photo-1.jpg

(CAN’T EVEN TELL I CUT IT, CAN YOU?)

OK MAYBE YOU CAN SEE MY HAIR BETTER HERE… I WAS HAVING AN INTERIOR STRUGGLE AS TO WHETHER I SHOULD CUT MY OWN HAIR OR IF I SHOULD ENTRUST IT TO SOMEONE ELSE. I WON.

Rhyming for Rhymes Sake

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Poetry can be tough because you want your poem to make sense

If the poem doesn’t have a story it may make the poet seem dense

So why don’t I just write lines that I am certain are going to rhyme?

By not including a thought process, it will save me lots of time

Yet still I have to worry about the meter I plan to use

And should I use real long words or a vocabulary that will amuse?

Just when I thought this poetry thing would become a piece of cake

I’ve found another obstacle keeping me from rhyming for rhymes sake
